Wild swimming around Scotland has been part of our pandemic survival. I love that so many of you are finding my blogs about these adventures and visiting the places yourselves. It’s so good for the mojo to get out and explore, mixing things up a little with a change of scenery.
Gladhouse Reservoir is around a 40 minute drive from Edinburgh. It’s 5 miles south of Penicuik and the largest area of freshwater in the Lothians. As you can see from the video, it can get pretty busy but there is plenty of parking around the area. It’s not too off the beaten track and much easier to find than the likes of the Sheriff Muir paradise pools.
Swimming wise, it has a similar vibe to Threipmuir Reservoir, which is closer to go if you are Edinburgh based. To get to Gladhouse Reservoir, we drove out from Edinburgh and passed the Secret Herb garden. This could be a nice place to stop on route or on the way back.
Now that we are into September, the water is starting to cool down a little. The last time I checked when swimming with a group, it was 17.6 degrees and then down to 16 degrees a few days later. As the temperature drops it is so important to listen to your body and stay safe. I will be continuing to check out new places, sharing them with you. Mojo injections all the way.
With all the sad news about people getting into trouble in the water over the summer, I picked up a new float, I love the bright pink shade. The kids use it too sometimes. We recently took a spontaneous trip to Threipmuir Reservoir one week night and enjoyed a BBQ. Here are some snaps with some of our new water floats, lots of fun. I love a sunset swim.
