Fighting the cold this winter – my favourite products to keep my mojo in check

I have had a horrible cold for two weeks now but, as a busy working Mum, I have had no choice other than to get the chin up and bash on.  I am trying to fake it until I make it back to full health.  I have cut down on the exercise a bit and don’t get me wrong, if I start to feel dizzy and really hot and cold, I try and get to bed early.  But if I am at home at night, it often involves a 3 year old jumping up and down on my head.  My 6 year old on the other hand is happy to share a relaxing bath with me and snuggle up for some guided meditation, which is bliss!

My Mum is a wise owl and often has an answer for every ache and pain, the lady knows her stuff.  She was a teacher for over 25 years and raised 3 kids, so I love to dip in for some of her soothing wisdom.

I was recently gifted a box of some of those products that my Mama swears by and after using them on and off for the past couple of months, it’s time to give you my honest thoughts.

winter bugs, Jojo Fraser and her mojo

Echinaforce Sore Throat Spray (£10.99 for 30ml)

My Mum has been banging on about Echinaforce for years and I do agree that it works.  I used it in September and also the past week.  It certainly eases the throat and my Mum swears that if used quickly enough, it can act as first defense.  So get spraying.  Many people find themselves a bit hoarse, to say the least, at this time of year.  Echinacea is great at fighting bacteria and viruses, making it a useful all-rounder. There are few pharmaceutical drugs that work against common cold and flu viruses, and antibiotics are to be avoided where possible. Echinacea is great for filling this treatment gap.

Arnica Skin Cream (£7.25 for 35g)

Arnica Skin Cream or tablets have always been a must in our house.  If I hurt myself as a kid, Mum gave me arnica.  It is made from the fresh extracts of Arnica flowers, which are found in the mountains of Europe and Siberia and is sometimes referred to as the ‘mountain daisy.’ Arnica contains lactones which, in the herbal format, contribute to the anti-inflammatory effect.  I love to use it after long distance running, a fall or pain.  It’s a must have in my opinion.

Venagel Horse Chestnut gel (£11.99 for 100ml)

Too much dancing and partying? Being on your feet all day can leave your legs feeling tired and achy come night-time or perhaps like me you do some long distance running.   I gave this a shot after my half marathon and it was great to soothe and relieve my heavy and tight legs.  The only thing I didn’t like was the smell.  It’s not awful but it’s not that nice and I love a nice scent.

Relaxing at home, lifestyle and wellness

Organic Pillow Spray (£15.95) which you can get from Healthy 2 U

I love this spray and it is a fab combination of essential oils specifically combined to CALM and SOOTHE as you fall asleep.  I am all for this kind of stuff and love spraying it before I hop into bed.  A good nights sleep gets me going and jumping into fresh sheets smelling of bergamot, lavnder, lemon etc – yeah baby!  I love my bed.  I really enjoy time in my bed, reading, meditating, snuggling and sleeping.  So I never see nice products for the bed or great quality sheets as a waste.  This lovely pillowcase has lasted 7 years, it was on our wedding list.  The Mrs is still going strong ha so clearly Hubs wriggles about more than I do.  I am on the lookout for a nice new set this Christmas, so if you have seen any then please fire my way.

Mood Essence – (£4.99 for 30ml)

This combination of the flower essences of Cherry Plum, Gentian, Gorse, Mustard, Scleranthus, Sweet Chestnut, Heather, Hornbeam, Zinnia, Bluebell, Borage and Self Heal is proven to be helpful in making us feel cheerful, uplifted, optimistic, enthusiastic and also comforted when we are feeling generally unhappy, negative, despondent and sad.  I have put the odd drop in my water but have not been keeping a mood journal and life is very hectic these days.  I plan to test it out over the holidays when I have a bit more time to notice how I am feeling so watch this space.  Either way it would make a nice secret santa gift or a stocking filler.

All of these products can be purchased here at Jan De Vries

with the exception of the lovely pillow mist spray at Healthy 2 U

Happy shopping and I hope you are well to enjoy all the festive fun.  Bah humbug to the bugs x
