It was lovely to have Laurie at the podcast launch last month, looking super glam as always. I caught up with her to find out a bit more about Edinburgh Loves kids.
What was the inspiration behind setting up Edinburgh Loves Kids?
Being a mum initially inspired me to set up Edinburgh Loves Kids – when my kids were younger I was always on the look out for fun things to do with them so I wanted to create a platform which made it easy to find such things. My background is in digital marketing so it was a natural choice to set up an online business, so after some brain storming, Edinburgh Loves Kidswas born. It was created to share events and activities available to families in Edinburgh & the Lothians. I wanted the website to not only share the mainstream events but also to highlight quirky and more unusual things that families can enjoy together. I spend a lot of time sourcing great events to share.
When I set it up, I didn’t realise just quite how much choice we have these days compared to when we were kids – did you know that you can walk an Alpaca, make slime, watch an outdoor movie, or even join in with a silent disco through the streets of Edinburgh?
Why did you launch the FAMILY CARD?
Edinburgh Loves Kids has a very loyal following both through the website and on our social media platforms, of which we are very grateful – so I wanted to do something to give back to our audience. The FAMILY CARD was launched in April 2018 as a way for parents to receive discounts at family friendly places, like visitor attractions, restaurants, soft play centres, kidsclasses, kids parties, kids hairdressers, cafes and much more. It really does offer great savings, especially if you are trying to keep your little ones entertained throughout school holidays, which we all know can be heavy on the purse.
What do you love about life in Edinburgh?
I love Edinburgh as it is such a diverse city. I live in the outskirts, just a hop skip and a jump from the beach, but in 15 minutes I can be walking through Princes Street Gardens admiring the view of Edinburgh Castle. I love that I am bringing my kids up in a city like Edinburgh – it always inspires me, and I hope that my kids feel that way too when they are a bit older. And, Edinburgh really has endless things to offer for families.
Perfect day in Edinburgh would be?
For me a perfect day in Edinburgh would start with a good coffee! My favourite coffee stop is Pumpkin Brown in the Grassmarket – their vegan cakes are amazing! From there I would wander up Victoria Street, as it’s one of my favourite streets in the city, and if my kids were with me, we would probably have to pop into Hula’s Juice Cafe as they LOVE their smoothies. If it was festival time, I would definitely take a stroll down the High Street and watch some of the street performers, as that never gets dull. Either spending the day with my family, or spending quality time with my girlfriends would be my ideal day.
Fave form of mindfulness?
I have recently been using the app Headspace – I find it really difficult to switch off so have turned to meditation to help me to do so. I find it helps me to focus on myself instead of my work, even if it’s only for a short period of time. We also recently adopted a rescue puppy from Spain – so walking him is my time to focus on the present, and I like to do this before I sit at my desk in the morning – it starts my day off perfectly!
Thanks Laurie. I shall announce a winner next weekend.
