I have been to El Cartel twice over the past few months and I love it. Passorn is my all time favourite Thai in Edinburgh (review here) and El Cartel is currently topping the charts for a mexican fix. Why?
Firstly the vibes. Tucked away in the lovely Thistle street, the joint is buzzing. You can’t book so it’s best to get there sharp. I met my mate Robin there at 6pm on the button to avoid dissapointment.
He was there waiting with margerita in hand. Oh my days, those margeritas are a highlight.
Plus there is limited wait as they are all prepared ‘slushy style’ with a lovely tequila – Don Julio. They offer a different selection of flavours each day. My favourites so far – the coconut and the straight up classic margerita. Way too easy to drink.
The menu is Mexican street food style and it’s super fresh and tasty. They have a nice selection of hot sauces on the tables if you are like me and enjoy taking the heat up a notch. Oh baby.
The homemade guacamole is delcious and the pomegranates make it feel even cleaner.
The tacos come in pairs which helps if you are like me and are prone to food envy. Just agree to swap one for one and take your pick from the likes of steak, marinated pork shoulder, duck and battered cod with chipotle crema. I fully intend to return so I can work my way through the list, whilst necking those margeritas like they are going out of fashion.
Definately a must try from me and happy to shout loud about this fab little find.
