Screw perfection, embrace momentum

Screw perfection, embrace momentum

Ok we are reaching the halfway point of 2017, blink and you will miss it.  Were you one of those who hit the gym in January, man it was packed!  Then quit?  Did you have a long list of goals but found it a bit overwhelming?  It can be so easy to just stop. Why not put it off until next week?  We all do it. I have a massive lift of goals, some big (won’t go into that yet) and some smaller such as sorting out my wardrobe again (capsule style), developing photos or sorting out catch ups and work events.

I know I can’t do it all at once AND I know that often momentum is more important than perfection.  Sometimes you just need to ignore the excuses such as –

I don’t have time to get it the way I want! AND JUST BASH ON.

Get to work, don’t delay, start today.  I did this very thing a couple of weeks ago with my son.  He has been ready for potty training for ages but I put it off because:

The weather was rubbish, I wanted it to be warmer and we had lots of plans which would make it harder.  Scheduling 3 days to be at home for accidents is not that easy.

Then I thought to myself, who cares? So what if he has a pee in the car or when we are out and about? It’s time to just BASH ON.  No turning back and now I wish I had started a bit sooner.

What are your priorities? Which goals really excite you?  Pick one or two and get focused.  Put your heart and soul into it when  you get the chance.  Break it down into small daily steps.  Try not to become overwhelmed with the bigger picture and the end result.  Slow and steady wins the race.

All goals are met when we chip away at them. Now, in my line of work, I don’t get the privilege to chip away at my big goals quietly.  I chose to share most of them with you all. I am achieving the goals though, even when the going gets tough and challenges come and punch me in the face.  That is life, sometimes we get tripped out.  If you read my recent article, I recently fell flat on my face but somehow still managed to get what I set out to do.  I worked hard, I stayed focused and I refused to let myself get cocky.  It worked.

What makes your stomach flip? What boxes do you want to tick?  What brings you joy? Get focused on it right now.  We are all here on this earth to make a difference.  Don’t just talk about what you want to achieve, go out and grab it with both hands.  Seriously. I want the passion my kids have.  I want to jump out of bed with the levels of excitement that they have.  My top tips:

Don’t just step but jump and dance out of that safety net.  It will feel uncomfortable. You will need to adapt and be open to learning.

Get outside, in nature.  It allows you to open up your mind and see things from a different perspective.  A change of scenery is so good for the soul.

Be open minded.  Mistakes are opportunities for growth, learn from them and don’t take them personally.  Mistakes can be a good thing.

Get a weekly planner.  These ones by Cherith Harrison are fantastic.

Be flexible, sometimes you need to get away from the usual routine you are used to.

Give yourself rewards.  Get some mini bottles of champagne (or full).  Chill them.  Every time you see progress or reach your goals, crack a bottle open.

Let me know how you get on. Work it, own it.
